When the war began in August, 1914, the 3rd Dragoon Guards were in India but soon returned home, to become part of 6 Cavalry Brigade in 3rd Cavalry Division. On 8th February, 1915, they moved into trenches one mile south-east of Zillebeke near Ypres, where they remained until relieved on 13th February. On 12th February William Baughen lost his life and was probably the man recorded in the unit diary as being killed by the enemy’s trench mortars. |
